According to Sky Sports in Germany, Bayer did not want to leave Dortmund, but was the player's former agent negotiated with Brentford in private.

Brentford is interested in Dortmund player Bayer. According to German Sky Sports reporter Florian Pretenberg, Brentford has offered a total price of 45 million pounds (about 52 million euros) to buy Bayer, including fixed transfer fees and floating bonuses, but the fixed transfer fee is relatively low. Dortmund has rejected the offer and does not want further negotiations.

German Sky Sports also pointed out that Bayer himself does not want to go to Brentford, he prefers to stay in Dortmund. But Bayer's former broker negotiated privately with Brentford to bypass Bayer's current brokerage firm.

Although Dortmund signed Fabio Silva, if there was no offer that far exceeded €50 million transfer fee, Dortmund would not have started Bayer's transfer negotiations. Bayer, 22, joined Dortmund last summer with a transfer fee of 28.5 million euros. He made 43 appearances last season, scoring 9 goals and assisting 6 times. The contract between Bayer and Dortmund expires in 2029.
