The governor of Nuevo Leon state in northern Mexico, Garcia, announced today that the American artificial intelligence (AI) chip industry giant NVIDIA (Nvidia) plans to invest US$1 billion to build a data center there. However, NVIDIA denied it a few hours later.

Reuters reported that Samuel Garcia uploaded a video on social media today, in which he announced, accompanied by NVIDIA representatives, that NVIDIA was planning to spend US$1 billion (approximately NT$31.1 billion) to build a so-called green data center in Nuevo Leone State, focusing on the development of AI.

But later NVIDIA provided a statement to Reuters, which stated: "NVIDIA has no financial investment plans in Nuevo Leon. Our support for digital transformation and technological advancement in Latin America is limited to cooperation initiatives, research and talent development."

It is currently unclear who the NVIDIA representatives who appeared in Garcia's video are and why they were not on hand to refute Garcia's claims.

In response to the above questions and how the data center mentioned by Garcia will be developed, Reuters asked NVIDIA if it would provide further explanation, but has not yet received a reply. The Nuevo Leon state government also did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.
